The Importance of Low Frequencies

Music on a grand scale – the importance of low frequencies….

Walls of Sound is dedicated to reproducing the full grandeur of musical and/or movie soundtrack performance. No one who has ever heard deep, accurate bass can accept anything less. We use a system which gives perceivable output well below 20 Hz, without the artificial resonance or distortion often associated with box loudspeakers.

All Walls of Sound two channel systems include bass performance that is supplied by two pairs of woofers per channel. The reason for this is because we do not use either bass reflex or sealed box loading to manipulate the resonance of the speaker, and artificially raise bass output. By doubling the number of drive units in the low frequency area, we double the efficiency, and dramatically reduce the load on each woofer. This results in cleaner bass with less compression and distortion.

We create bass in your living room by using the cavity of your exterior walls as a chamber. Most houses built since the 1920s have cavity exterior walls, with a cavity of between 50 - 75mm (2 - 3”) in depth. By using the cavity, the woofer, carefully selected for its extended excursion capabilities, is able to move as if in free air, with no resistance to its movement, and no increase in either the frequency or magnitude of its resonance. We also carefully use the room boundaries to reinforce the bass still further. The result is very deep, clear, powerful bass, which goes down to below audible levels.

The open baffle mid range….

Separated by feet of brick from the bass unit, the mid range is mounted directly into the brick wall and vents into the rear cavity of the wall so that rear energy is dissipated in the cavity enclosure, rather than reflected back to the cone by a closed box. The result is a transparency that cannot be matched by conventional box loudspeakers. The gain of the solidity of brick wall mounting, and the absence of rear energy reflected back through the cone, creates ideal conditions for mid range purity and clarity.

The brick-mounted tweeter…

The high frequency unit also benefits from brick mounting, close to, but totally isolated from, the mid range unit, giving outstanding clarity of sound and stunning transient performance. All the high frequency units used are sealed rear chamber which effectively absorbs rear radiation and provides optimum damping for the dome unit. More to the point however, the high frequencies are totally isolated from vibration transmitted via the normal loudspeaker baffle.
